Essere o Avere?

One of the most confusing topics in Italian is when to use essere o avere in the passato prossimo. We know that passato prossimo is the most common way to express a recent past.
You might have seen sono andato and ho mangiato. Why do they change?
Think of the verbs. To go and to eat. I go (I am moving somewhere). I eat (I accomplish an action). When you talk about movement, change of state, reflexive verbs you use ESSERE.
When you refer to other actions (eat, create, do) then you will use AVERE.

Io sono andato I went
Io sono uscito I went out
Io sono arrivato I arrived

Io ho mangiato I ate
Io ho fatto I did
Io ho creato I created

If you have any doubt, please message me! I will be glad to help you!

Hello, my name is Victoria and I am a professional Italian and Spanish teacher. I grew up in Italy but currently live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I love teaching, sharing my knowledge with people and learning from others too! As for my education, I have a degree in English language and I recently obtained the TESOL certificate. I am currently pursuing the ELE certificate that attests to the teaching of Spanish. I graduated from the Liceo Linguistico of Carlo Amoretti High School in beautiful Liguria, a region of northern Italy. I have more than 5 years of experience in education. I have been teaching Italian, Spanish and English at all levels and in language schools, bilingual schools, institutions, companies, private tutoring, foreign language projects. I have also collaborated with important applications for language learning. I have taught students of different nationalities, which is always an enriching experience. I am currently working in a bilingual school in Buenos Aires. My classes are very interactive and involve a lot of conversation! I use a communicative approach because I believe that it is better to learn a language through interaction and the use of contextualized vocabulary. I adjust each lesson according to each person's interest, level, needs and objectives by working on reading and listening comprehension, grammar and conversation. Together we can talk about our culture, travel and share our experiences. If you are interested in Italian culture, I will be happy to guide you and show you the wonders of my country. We can also talk about food, music, travel and a variety of other topics - we can even practice for a possible job interview! I provide the material, videos, songs, radio clips and more interactive material to make the most of our lessons. Thank you for reading my profile and I hope to help you learn and improve your Italian and Spanish soon! :)
